How to perform an energetic body scan

Updated: Nov 15, 2021

Have you ever heard of a body scan? It's a mental exercise to check in with your physical body, heal yourself, and even relax your nervous system. When we use our minds to pour love and positive energy into our vessels intentionally, we can affect our health, prevent illness, and even heal injuries. The more you utilize the practice, the quicker we can feel and identify dysfunction in the body and work to resolve it.

Here's how you do it::

1: Start by lying in a comfortable position. Out loud like quick-fire, state things you genuinely love. You might say, "I love my kids. I love my spouse. I love my job. I love my home." Say them quickly and without much thought. It should feel natural. The key is to FEEL the love, which will raise your vibrational state. Once you've said at least ten things you love, take three deep cleansing breaths and let out a resounding, "OMMMMMMM." Now, stop and feel. Take notice that your mind is clear, your awareness is sharp, and you're ready to begin the body scan.

2. Use your imagination to visualize a bright sunbeam entering from the crown of your head. Allow the light to scan your body from top to bottom slowly. You're checking every cell, bone, and organ in your body.

3. Don't forget to breathe while you're performing a body scan. We tend to hold our breath which holds tension in our bodies; you want to be as relaxed as possible. Every time you exhale, imagine yourself blowing out any negative energy, blockages, or toxins from your body.

4. Take notice of how you feel in your body? Do you feel any sensations in your body? Some report a change in body temperature, seeing flashes of light or color in your body, or hearing a voice of guidance.

5. Do you feel any blockages in your body? If so, sit with it, breathe into it. Ask your body why that block is present and what you need to do to release it. Don't overanalyze your thoughts or judge them. Just allow them to come. Our bodies are like supercomputers that send warnings and alerts when something is off. Try deep conscious breaths into the area that feels blocked until you feel it resolve.

6. Finish your body scan by taking a deep breath and thanking your physical body, mind, and spirit for the healing. I like to change my physical position, lightly shake my whole body, or do a forward bend to shake off any energy I'm ready to release.

Try to do body scans regularly to build the mind-body connection, allowing you to notice more quickly when something doesn't feel right; however, it cannot replace a doctor visit. I recommend everyone have yearly physicals and blood work to be sure they're functioning at optimal health.
