What happened when I free-wrote this article...and why you should try free-writing too

First, do you know what free-writing is? Some call it auto-writing. In a spiritual sense, it's the ability to write freely without conscious thought.

According to Britannica, automatic writing is produced involuntarily when the subject's attention is directed elsewhere. The phenomenon may occur when the subject is in an alert waking state—and writes unrelated words, fragments of poetry, epithets, puns, obscenities, or even well-organized fantasies.

I found free-writing to be very helpful on my journey to healing. It exposed old wounds that had scabbed over but never fully healed. And boy, did I have a lot of healing to do—from childhood trauma, relationship scars, and what some may find surprising, a real battle of self-worth.

I was introduced to free-writing by Lee Harris about six months ago. He suggested we start any session with the following prompt: What does my soul want me to know today?

That's it, and then without thinking, I would quickly write whatever came to mind without second-guessing it. And once I started writing, I needed to remind myself that my ego-mind would try to convince me that she was the one writing.

Ignore ego girl; she always tries to show up and take credit for the good sh*t but is the first one to try to talk us out of anything related to change, hardship, risk, challenges. She operates on fear and holds us back.

I'm still working on silencing her. But she's not as loud as she used to be. When I figure it out, I'll let y'all know, but for now, I've found exercise (especially done outdoors and in nature) helps to tame her anxious chatter.

- But back to the task at hand: free-writing -

You literally have to get out of your head to do it. And despite your reasoning mind wanting to take over, fight the urge and keep writing—for at least 5-10 minutes. When you're finished, go back and read what you wrote. Do you feel it? Does it resonate? Was there a message in there for you?

At the end of the session, I like to thank my soul for the message, whether it made sense or not. Because each time I do it, I'm opening channels of communication from deep within me. Think of it as searching for the local radio stations in a new city.

For me, I like to call it tapping into a higher frequency or my "divine mind."

I've written short poems, action plans, dreams, values, graphs and charts, creative drawings, and cold-hard facts to myself. They've made me laugh, cry, ponder, and plot.

So here goes. I am going to free-write for anyone who's reading this now. I'm only going to do one minute for the sake of your time and my hands.

I closed my eyes and took and deep breath, and asked, "What does my soul want to tell the person reading this right now?"

And this is what my soul wrote:

"Whatever you need today to move forward in peace and calm, do it. If you need to take a breath, a beat, a walk, or a flight, take it. Whatever your soul calls out to you to do—you owe it to yourself to do it. You deserve to heal. Investing in you first will always pay out enormous dividends. A world of healed people is a healed world. I love you. You've always been enough."

If you happen to be reading this, that message is for you. And with that understanding, go back and reread it.

Now go about your day, hopefully, a little calmer, more peaceful, and ready to take whatever it is your soul needs today.

Oh, and most importantly, start a conversation with your soul. It's a toll-free number, open 24-hours a day. There's never a wait time or an automated assistant who never actually assists?

If you try it, I want to hear what you think. Send me a message or add a comment below.

light + love + z

Disclaimer: I would never edit my free-write, but I fixed grammatical errors and sentence structure for readability, but the message's authenticity is still all there.
